Šaman – ‘A clever fella’ – A Shaman

A shaman is someone who is able to transcend the mental limitations of culture. A shaman knows more than the people he serves because their consciousness is similar to the children that exist within the cultural game. Only a shaman knows that the cultural rules and thought that govern it are a social agreement that should not be taken too seriously. Because of this liberation, he can perform his ‘magic’.

When I was among the Australian Aborigines, I learned that the word shaman for them means ‘clever fella’, someone who thinks more broadly than most. When an Aborigine says that someone is a clever fella, he is expressing a ‘professional’ path. It is easy to recognize him, for he alone will not look curiously at the stranger and be interested in the unusual objects he brings with him. It will remain intact. When confronted with a shaman, you recognize that he is not looking at your exterior, clothes, things, etc., but is looking straight at you with eyes free of cultural thought: are you a fool or are you a clever fella? He is interested in what your measure is, how many given situations you really understand, how many levels you are aware of at the same time. When you look at a man like that, you don’t have much choice, either you grow up or you run away.

The shaman lives in t.i. a hyper space that embraces and transcends the three-dimensional world of things and knows from it who stole the earth, who cheated the chief’s son, what the weather promises, who will die and who will live, what a game with culture-conditioned man is. For a shaman, seeing is not magic, it is simply freedom, it is staying at the most primordial level of consciousness, uncorrupted by social thought.
